Celebrating 50 Years of Sustainable Mobility: The Doerpsmobil Success Story

The small town of Nortorf, in the district of Steinburg, Schleswig-Holstein, is set to host the 50th Doerpsmobil, marking a significant milestone in the movement for sustainable mobility in rural areas.

The Doerpsmobil, a shared, electric vehicle, has been revolutionizing transportation in many communities since its inception in 2016. The 50th Doerpsmobil is a testament to the growing popularity of this eco-friendly mobility solution.

Torsten Sommer, Managing Director of ALR SH e.V., emphasizes the importance of this initiative. "Our goal is to make people in the countryside mobile again with innovative, sustainable solutions," he says. ALR SH e.V., an Academy for Rural Areas in Schleswig-Holstein, provides support and coordination for the Doerpsmobil associations.

The Doerpsmobil associations are a grassroots effort, organized voluntarily by citizens for citizens. The motto of the Doerpsmobils is "Sharing, the new having." This shared, flexible use of the vehicles not only benefits wallets but also the environment, as many households are able to forgo a second car.

The 50th Doerpsmobil association in Nortorf demonstrates that citizen-driven mobility can function without economic interest. The association's success is a clear example of people's willingness to take on responsibility for climate and quality of life on a voluntary basis.

The Doerpsmobil Nortorf e.V. association is not just a round milestone but also lives up to the vision of environmentally friendly, social, and future-oriented mobility. The next Dorfmobil meeting could take place at Suhr’s Gasthof in Eddelak, with community events and gatherings already being organized there starting from October 9, 2025.

The success of the Doerpsmobil project is particularly significant in rural areas where public transport is often poorly developed. The Doerpsmobil provides a sustainable mobile alternative, integrating seamlessly into village life.

More interest groups in Schleswig-Holstein are continuously joining and founding their Doerpsmobil associations, relying on emission-free vehicles, shared use, and integration into village life. The Doerpsmobil story is set to continue, with the possibility of the next Doerpsmobil in another community.
