The Spanish company Talgo, known for its train manufacturing, has announced that its latest creation, the ICE L trains, will be gradually introduced from mid-December. These long-distance trains have been designed with smooth, level boarding, as indicated by the "L" in their name, and are set to replace the old Intercity-1 trains.

Deutsche Bahn, the German railway company operating the trains, has revealed that the ICE L can now enter service at the end of the year, as previously planned. Originally, the planned start of operation for the ICE L was delayed from the fall of 2024 due to supply chain issues with the manufacturer and delays in the testing and certification process.

The ICE L trains, operated by Deutsche Bahn, are produced by Talgo and visually resemble Intercity trains more than other ICE trains. The first four ICE L trains are expected to enter service this year, with nine more scheduled to follow in 2026. In the initial phase, these new trains will operate between Berlin and Cologne within Germany.

The ICE L trains can reach speeds of up to 230 kilometers per hour, making them a viable option for long-distance travel. However, it's important to note that they are not as fast as other ICE trains. Despite this, the smooth boarding experience they offer is a significant improvement for passengers.

Deutsche Bahn has ordered a total of 79 ICE L trains, signalling a commitment to modernising its long-distance train fleet. As these new trains gradually enter service, passengers can look forward to a more comfortable and efficient travel experience.
