In a recent study, the wage size in Russia's regions was analysed, revealing significant differences in earnings across the country. The study involved 28.4 million people from 95,400 organisations, excluding small businesses.

Leading the pack is Chukotka, which ranks second in the rating with 55% of workers earning above the national average. Close behind is Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (Yugra), with 52.7% of workers earning above the national average. Yamal follows suit with an impressive 66.5% of workers earning above the national average.

On the other end of the spectrum, Kursk Oblast ranks 51st in Russia by wage size, with only 20.8% of workers earning above the Russian average. Neighbouring Sverdlovsk Oblast ranks 26th in Russia, but only 28% of workers receive wages above the Russian average of over 97,000 rubles.

The study further reveals that regions with a strong defence industry or resource extraction sectors, such as Yamal, Chukotka, and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, tend to have higher wages. This is due to the benefits these regions reap from government contracts and subsidies. Conversely, regions with lower wages typically experience higher unemployment and poverty rates compared to the Russian average.

Interestingly, the number of wage millionaires in Russia has been growing and nearly doubled from around 24,500 two years ago, with approximately 45,000 Russians now earning over 1 million rubles per month.

Tyumen Oblast ranks 11th in the Ural Federal District with 38.2% of workers earning above the Russian average, while Chelyabinsk Oblast ranks 24th among Ural Federal District regions with 29.9% of workers earning above the Russian average.

These findings highlight the economic disparities across Russia's regions, underscoring the need for policies that promote economic development and job creation in regions with lower wages.
