The Radisson Collection Hotel, situated near Alexanderplatz, has announced plans to reopen at the end of the year with a new lobby centrepiece - a breathtaking vertical garden. This news comes after the hotel made international headlines in December 2022 due to an explosion in its 16-metre-high indoor aquarium.

The incident resulted in the release of approximately 1,500 fish and a million litres of water into the hotel lobby and onto the street outside. However, the design of the new vertical garden aims to make use of as much of the aquarium's remaining material as possible. The 150-ton-concrete base of the exploded aquarium will be reused in the construction of the vertical garden.

The new centrepiece will be a 16-metre-high vertical garden, spanning approximately 120 square metres and reaching up to the sixth floor. It will be arranged on 36 tree-like vertical slats, containing approximately 2,000 plants of 22 different species. The vertical garden will feature dramatic lighting that changes over the course of the day, adding an extra touch of elegance.

The cost of the lobby rebuild at the Radisson Collection Hotel has not been made public by Union Investment, the property owner. The company responsible for recycling the 90-ton acrylic glass from the exploded aquarium in the hotel has not been identified in the available search results. However, it has been confirmed that the acrylic fragments are being examined by experts to determine the cause of the accident, and the 90 tons of acrylic glass will be recycled by a certified waste disposal company this summer.

The investigation into the cause of the aquarium explosion was closed in October 2023 due to lack of a clear conclusion. Fabian Hellbusch, a spokesman for Union Investment Real Estate GmbH, announced the new vertical garden, stating that it would replace the exploded aquarium as the centrepiece of the hotel lobby.

The Radisson Collection Hotel has been closed since the incident in December 2022. With the completion of the vertical garden, guests can look forward to a refreshing and vibrant lobby experience when the hotel reopens at the end of the year.
