In the political landscape of Argentina, the upcoming national elections in October 2025 are shaping up to be a closely contested race. No specific party has emerged as the clear frontrunner, following a significant defeat suffered by President Javier Milei's party in the important Buenos Aires province in September 2025.

Javier Milei, who was elected President in December 2023, is currently grappling with a series of challenges. His party, Libertad Avanza (LLA), secured just under 34% of the votes in Buenos Aires, while the Peronist party, Fuerza Patria, received over 47%. The provincial result on Sunday does not necessarily foreshadow the national elections in October.

The Milei government has been making efforts to address economic issues. In response to recent acceleration of peso depreciation amidst pre-election jitters in financial markets, the government began intervening in the foreign exchange market. This move was aimed at halting the depreciation of the peso.

However, the Milei government is also facing scrutiny. Javier Milei is surrounded by scandals, including one involving alleged bribes at the National Disability Agency that implicates his sister, Karina Milei, who is the Secretary-General of the Presidency. Despite this, Karina Milei has not been directly implicated by the justice system.

In a surprising turn of events, the executive argued that a recent legislative setback was necessary to maintain a sacred budgetary balance. On Thursday, September 4, Parliament overturned a presidential veto on a bill to increase funding for disabled people.

Axel Kicillof, Governor of Buenos Aires, has been vocal about his criticism of Milei. He recently called for Milei to change course and govern for the people.

Despite the challenges, polls consistently suggest a solid core of approval for Javier Milei around 40%, or even higher, in the upcoming national elections. The Milei government has made significant strides in reducing inflation, with a reduction to 17.3% over seven months since January, compared to 87% over the same period in 2024.

The provincial result in Buenos Aires does not seem to have dented the hopes of Axel Kicillof, who is seen as a main opposition presidential hopeful. The LLA party is expected to double its contingent of 12 seats in the Buenos Aires provincial assembly.

The election held on September 7, 20XX in the crucial province of Buenos Aires, while a setback for Milei, is considered an important test for his party. The province of Buenos Aires accounts for over a third of the national electorate, making it a significant factor in the national elections.

As the October elections approach, the political landscape in Argentina continues to evolve, with the outcome still uncertain. The elections will be a crucial test for Javier Milei and his party, as they navigate the challenges and strive to win the support of the Argentine people.
