Army of Lebanon prepares for execution of covert assignments, in alignment with American-supported disarmament scheme aimed at Hezbollah group
In a significant development, General Rodolphe Haykal, the head of the Lebanese Army, has announced that the military will take on major responsibilities at all levels. During a meeting with the military's top generals, General Haykal outlined the army's plan to carry out sensitive missions, potentially involving the disarmament of Hezbollah and Palestinian groups.
The army's plan, which was requested by the Lebanese government in early August, will be discussed by the Cabinet on Sept. 5. The decision comes amidst ongoing tension between the Lebanese government and Hezbollah, with the latter vowing not to disarm, stating that the government's decision serves Israel's interests.
Hezbollah officials have stated that they will not discuss their disarmament until Israel withdraws from five hills it controls inside Lebanon and stops almost daily airstrikes. The Israeli military claimed responsibility for a drone strike that killed an official from Hezbollah's elite Radwan Forces in south Lebanon on Friday. These airstrikes have resulted in the death or injury of hundreds of people, most of whom are Hezbollah members.
In response, General Haykal stated that the army will take necessary steps to ensure mission success and preserve peace among civilians. He also mentioned that the army is in contact with Syrian authorities to control the border between the two countries. Before the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad in December, Hezbollah received much of its weapons from Iran through Syria.
The Lebanese government's decision to disarm Hezbollah has not been welcomed by the militia's leader, Naim Kassem. He has previously blamed the government if the situation leads to internal conflict in Lebanon. Hezbollah has also accused the government of serving Israel's interests.
However, General Haykal has emphasised that the army's approach to this delicate stage will prioritise the preservation of civil peace and internal stability. The military missions related to the disarmament of the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon will be carried out by the Lebanese Army under the condition that weapons control is monopolized by the state.
Lebanon has a U.S.-backed plan to disarm Hezbollah and remove weapons from Palestinian refugee camps. The exact details of this plan are yet to be revealed, but it is clear that the situation in Lebanon is poised for significant change. As the Lebanese Army prepares to take on these sensitive missions, the future of the country remains uncertain.
