Arrest halts current outbreak of fires
In the small town of Grevenbroich, a series of fires broke out on Tuesday night into Wednesday, 20-21 April 2021. A total of six fires were reported, affecting hedges, garden sheds, and wooden bridges.
The first fire started at 22:45 at the Ostwall. As the night progressed, fires had also spread to hedges and garden sheds at Gerberstraße and Belmener Weg. Witnesses reported seeing a young man throwing burning objects into the hedges.
By 23:45, fires at Gerberstraße had been independently extinguished, but firefighters had to intervene at Belmener Weg. Unfortunately, an elderly man was injured by smoke gases at this location.
The police have been investigating the incidents, and a 25-year-old man from Bedburg has admitted to the current offenses. The investigation of the Criminal Investigation Department 11 is ongoing to determine if there are links between other fires. The series ended with the arrest of the suspect by Grevenbroich police.
