Arsenal players' evaluations versus Liverpool: Viktor Gyokeres disappears once more, and William Saliba encounters a significant injury setback in Liverpool's defeat at Anfield
In a closely fought Premier League match at Anfield on Sunday, Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 1-0 to Liverpool.
The Gunners' defence, led by Riccardo Calafiori who was rated 8/10, put up a valiant effort, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Reds from securing the victory. David Raya, Arsenal's goalkeeper, also had his moments, earning a 6/10 rating, but ultimately the defence was breached by a stunning free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Mikel Arteta's side struggled to take enough risks to try and win the game, with Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi, the midfielders, failing to provide the same attacking spark that was needed. The Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta, will be disappointed with this performance, as his Anfield hoodoo remains.
The match was not without its dramatic moments. William Saliba was injured during the match and had to be substituted after just five minutes. Noni Madueke used his pace effectively, forcing Alisson into a save and even forcing a save from the Liverpool goalkeeper after a corner. However, Gabriel Martinelli offered little for Arsenal's attack and seems to be lacking in confidence.
Cody Gakpo was offside in the build-up to a goal that was disallowed for Liverpool, while Jurrien Timber, Arsenal's defender, was rated 7/10 in a solid performance. Cristhian Mosquera dealt well with Ekitike after coming on for Saliba, and Eberechi Eze made a few dangerous runs in his 20 minutes on the pitch.
The loss was a disappointing end to the match for Arsenal, who will look to bounce back in their next fixture. Martin Odegaard, who was substituted during the game, will be hoping to create a moment of magic in their next outing. Max Dowman was substituted in the final minutes of the game, leaving Arsenal to reflect on a tough defeat against a resilient Liverpool side.
