Art Gallery Black Iris showcases Neon Exhibition: Surroundings, created by Chloe Kottwitz
In the heart of Richmond's Arts District, Black Iris Art Gallery is set to present a captivating solo exhibition by neon artist Chloe Kottwitz. The exhibition, titled Surroundings, will run from September 5 to September 26.
Chloe Kottwitz, the owner of Uptown Neon - the last operating neon workshop in Richmond, Virginia - challenges traditional notions of neon by reimagining it as a medium for drawing with glass and light. Her practice centers on mixed-material sculptures that often combine neon and wood, reflecting a dedication to preserving the legacy of neon while evolving its role in contemporary art and design.
The exhibition will feature a diverse range of sculptural pieces, including large-scale light installations and table-side lamps. Kottwitz's work for this exhibition is the result of spending thirty minutes each day creating something for herself, as advised by her mentor Douglas Solyan.
Black Iris Art Gallery, a vibrant community hub in Richmond, offers open membership opportunities providing access to its full range of programming and private spaces. As a private social club, cigar lounge, and concert venue, the gallery offers unique cultural and social experiences to members and guests.
The exhibition opening night is on September 5 from 6-10pm, with an Artist Talk on September 11 at 7pm and a closing reception on September 26 from 5-9pm. Additional hours for the exhibition are announced on Uptown Neon's Instagram or by appointment.
Black Iris Art Gallery hosts monthly exhibitions, artist talks, and special events, providing an inclusive space for art, music, and ideas to converge. For press inquiries, images, or interview requests, please contact Black Iris Art Gallery via [email protected] or blackirissocialclub.com.
Chloe Kottwitz moved to Richmond four years ago to apprentice under Douglas Solyan at Uptown Neon. Since then, she has owned the workshop and is now restoring a historic bank in her hometown of Bolivar, NY, with plans to establish a neon school and artist residency.
Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the captivating world of neon art. Surroundings by Chloe Kottwitz is presented by Black Iris Art Gallery, located at 321 W. Broad St., Richmond, VA. Private appointments are available upon request.
