Artificial intelligence-based age verification system implemented across Google's platforms
Google is taking a significant step in enhancing online safety for younger users, as it announces the expansion of its AI-powered age verification system across various services within the United States. This development builds upon the recent introduction of AI-driven age estimation on YouTube.
The company has unveiled plans to integrate this technology across its services, potentially scrutinizing a wider spectrum of user online behaviours to determine age. Initially, the system will be tested with a select group of users before being gradually rolled out to a larger user base.
Users who fail to verify their age or whose age is correctly identified as under 18 by the system will encounter restrictions within Google's ecosystem. These restrictions include access to Digital Wellbeing tools such as bedtime reminders on YouTube, the disabling of personalized advertisements, the suspension of Timeline history in Google Maps, and the inability to access age-restricted applications through the Play Store.
The machine learning algorithms used in Google's age verification system analyse user account activity, including search queries, YouTube viewing habits, and other behavioural indicators. Users can verify their age by submitting a copy of their identification or by uploading a selfie.
Google emphasises its intention to minimise unnecessary data collection, only requesting proof of age when deemed necessary by the algorithm. However, concerns about potential misidentification arise, as adults might be incorrectly flagged and experience unwarranted limitations.
The expansion of Google's age assurance system signifies a platform-wide effort, extending beyond YouTube's video recommendations.
