Artificial Intelligence exploration in Dresden: Advancing cancer diagnosis and treatment strategies
The Else Kröner Fresenius Center Dresden (EKFZ) for Digital Health is leading the DECIPHER-M project, a five-year research initiative aimed at understanding cancer cell spread using artificial intelligence (AI). Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the first three years, with an approximate budget of 5.5 million euros, the project is scheduled to run from this year until 2030.
The DECIPHER-M project focuses on metastasis, the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body, which makes cancer harder to treat due to its elusive nature and influence from multiple factors. The goal of the project is to improve cancer treatment options, enable earlier and more precise diagnoses, and preventive measures through its AI-based approach.
The project employs a multimodal approach, connecting various types of data to create a comprehensive understanding. This includes tissue samples, X-ray images, and genetic information. The ultimate goal is to develop personalized treatment strategies based on individual metastasis risk predictions, which could potentially lead to better long-term survival rates for cancer patients and improved treatment and quality of life.
Prof. Jakob Nikolas Kather is coordinating the DECIPHER-M project. In addition to the EKFZ, project partners from Aachen, Essen, Heidelberg, Mainz, and Munich are involved. However, based on current public knowledge, no information is available about these partners.
The DECIPHER-M project aims to secure around 9 million euros in total funding. A better understanding of metastasis could lead to new therapeutic approaches, making a significant impact on the lives of many cancer patients. With its innovative approach, the DECIPHER-M project holds great promise in the fight against cancer.
