Artificial Intelligence giant OpenAI partners with Greek secondary education and startups to prepare for the upcoming 'Age of Intelligence'

In a significant move, the Greek Government has announced a partnership with AI company OpenAI to bring cutting-edge AI technology to its secondary schools and startups. This partnership is part of Greece's ambitious plan to prepare its people for the opportunities of the Intelligence Age.

The partnership will kick off this Saturday with the launch of the Greek AI Accelerator Program, aimed at nurturing AI-driven startups. The program offers mentorship from OpenAI engineers, tailored workshops on scaling AI products and safety, exposure to investors, and a visit to OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters. The goal is to retain Greek tech talent and foster innovation in critical sectors such as healthcare and climate.

As part of this partnership, Greece will be among the first countries to use a chatbot tailored for academic institutions by OpenAI, called ChatGPT Edu. This tool provides access to OpenAI's latest models and supports GDPR compliance. OpenAI has also announced it will share best practices for safe and effective classroom use of the technology.

However, concerns have been raised about the potential misuse of AI in education. Teachers have reported issues with students using AI to write essays or do homework, making it difficult to identify. The first phase of the pilot focuses on building AI literacy, helping teachers boost productivity, and integrating AI responsibly into their work.

OpenAI has also addressed the issue of psychological dependency, following a lawsuit filed against it and its CEO Sam Altman by the parents of a 16-year-old who committed suicide. The company has announced it would add new parental controls to ChatGPT.

The implementation of AI in schools will not occur immediately, but there will be a pilot this year with upper-secondary schools selected to reflect regional and socio-economic diversity. The aim of this pilot is to prepare the people of Greece for the economic opportunities of the Intelligence Age.

The US first lady Melania Trump has urged watchful guidance of AI for children, but no specific connection to the Greece and OpenAI partnership is mentioned in this article. Chris Lehane, Chief Global Affairs Officer at OpenAI, stated that Greece is once again showing its dedication to learning and ideas by adopting AI technology.

It's worth noting that AI, like any technology, can generate false information. As such, it's crucial to approach its implementation with caution and a focus on safety and compliance. The Greek AI Accelerator Program includes mentorship from OpenAI engineers, workshops on compliance and safety, and connections to leading AI investors and innovators.

This partnership between OpenAI and the Greek government is expected to expand across Greece's education system following successful outcomes. It marks a significant step forward in Greece's digital transformation and its commitment to harnessing the power of AI for the benefit of its people and economy.
