Artificial Intelligence Paving the Way for Fashion's Next Big Step?
In the ever-evolving world of fashion, artificial intelligence (AI) is making a significant impact. One online retailer leading the charge is Revolve, which utilizes AI for various aspects of its business. From imagery development to personalizing the consumer's shopping experience, AI is at the heart of Revolve's operations.
AI is also making waves in the fashion industry at large. Software like Botika develops templates for models and backgrounds, while tools like MidJourney AI and Runway ML are being used by designers to create headshots and virtual prototypes of garments.
Erik Randerson, Senior Vice President of Investor Relations at Revolve, highlighted the benefits of AI, stating that it helps the company predict emerging trends, optimize pricing, and identify demand. This predictive power is also being leveraged by fashion professors like Naomi Ellis at ASU FIDM, who believes AI can help predict customer trends and improve transparency in brand manufacturing.
In Ellis's spring course, students were tasked with developing AI tools for fashion. One student created a chatbot to help customers choose the right shoes, while another developed a sustainability rating system. These projects demonstrate the versatility and potential of AI in the fashion industry.
AI is also being used in more traditional aspects of the fashion industry, such as the supply chain and merchandising. Gianluca Traina, who started using AI for fashion design in 2023, showcased his AI-assisted designs at A.I. Fashion Week and placed in the Top 10.
However, not everyone is convinced about the future of AI in fashion. Runway model Shaun Anthony Hill worries that the runway turning completely virtual could take away from the personal aspects that people tend to appreciate in the fashion industry. He believes that the industry's unique human touch should not be lost in the pursuit of technological advancement.
Despite these concerns, Ellis is optimistic about the future. She doesn't think that AI will eliminate potential jobs in the fashion industry but rather enhance creative roles, freeing up time for creatives to focus on more meaningful tasks. She also believes that having students ready to work with advanced technologies will give them a major advantage when they graduate.
Revolve is also experimenting with an AI-driven virtual assistant to ensure the fit of clothes is more accurate, in the hope of reducing the rate of returns. The virtual try-on feature, still in its early stages, allows customers to pick a model that resembles them and mix and match styles before purchasing.
As AI continues to revolutionize the fashion industry, it's clear that its impact will be far-reaching. From predicting trends to personalizing shopping experiences, AI is set to change the way we shop for and experience fashion.
