Artwork Creation: Lemon Still Life with a Touch of Van Gogh's Style
The Lemon Art Project is an engaging still-life art project designed to introduce children to the world of art. This project requires basic supplies, including a bowl of lemons, paper, drawing pencils, oil pastels, a cotton swab, and a printable overview.
In this project, kids are encouraged to study their still-life objects, sketch or lightly draw the subject, fill in color using oil pastels, and add darker amounts of color for shadows and lighter amounts of color where the light hits the lemons. This process helps children practice observational drawing, shading, and rendering textures.
The genre of still-life art offers an opportunity to introduce kids to foundational art concepts like shape, form, light, shadow, and composition. Still-life art focuses on inanimate objects such as fruits, flowers, household items, and other everyday objects.
Vincent van Gogh, one of the world's most famous painters, is a great example of a still-life artist. Born in the Netherlands in 1853, van Gogh used painting as a means to express his emotions. His still-life paintings often featured a variety of fruits, flowers, and everyday objects, such as "Still Life with Apples, Pears, Lemons and Grapes" (1887).
By examining van Gogh's works, kids can gain insights into his technique and approach to still-life compositions. The Lemon Art Project suggests using multiple shades of yellow to create texture, just like van Gogh did in his paintings.
For those interested in exploring more famous artists, there are over 20 artists for kids to discover, including Mona Lisa, M.C. Escher, Jackson Pollock, Picasso, Hokusai, Haring, and more. The Famous Artists Project Pack includes resources to explore over 25 famous artists, including women, people of color, and indigenous peoples.
The Art Techniques Pack teaches watercolor, collage, and printmaking techniques for art projects, while the 7 Elements of Art Pack helps kids learn about and explore the 7 elements of art with handy information, tips, and fun projects to try.
