Asahi Kasei Microdevices unveils camera-free technology
Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation has announced the launch of its new AKM AiM (Antenna-in-Module) mmWave radar modules, the AK5816AIM and AK5818AIM. These modules are designed to accelerate proof-of-concept (PoC) development and the integration of sensor functions, making them ideal for a wide range of applications, including home monitoring.
The AKM AiM modules are compact, measuring just 23 mm x 23 mm, and integrate the AK581x mmWave radar IC and an antenna array. This integration eliminates the need for a custom RF design, simplifying the evaluation and development process.
The "AIMEZ V" kit, optimized for rapid proof-of-concept and implementation testing, is one of the two evaluation kits offered by Asahi Kasei. The other is the "LUMI" kit, designed for advanced algorithm development and equipped with a powerful system-on-chip (SoC) for large-scale data processing and machine learning applications. Both kits include a basic software environment for rapid setup and support the integration of proprietary algorithms, enabling a smooth transition from evaluation to product development.
The AKM AiM modules offer high angular resolution, enabling precise detection of vital signs, position, movement, posture, and falls. They can also distinguish between people, pets, and objects, making them privacy-compliant solutions suitable for bedrooms and bathrooms.
These modules can contribute to faster response times in emergencies and reduce caregiver workload. They can also be used for motion-dependent control of HVAC systems or lighting, potentially increasing energy efficiency.
Asahi Kasei has identified the "Electronics" business area as a strategic growth area. The development of AKM's new AiM mmWave radar modules and evaluation kits underscores the company's commitment to continuing to proactively invest in growth and drive innovation.
According to a survey by AARP, more and more people are planning to age independently in their own homes, with the figure in the United States expected to reach 75% by 2024. This increases the demand for privacy-conscious support through cameraless systems in the home. The AKM AiM modules, with their unobtrusive design, could play a significant role in meeting this demand.
In conclusion, Asahi Kasei's new AKM AiM mmWave radar modules and evaluation kits are a step forward in the development of privacy-compliant, compact, and versatile sensor solutions for home monitoring and beyond.
