Assessing Flood Risks Across Bavaria - According to THW Bayern

In the aftermath of the severe flooding in southern Bavaria, the Technical Relief Organization (THW) has been at the forefront of the cleanup efforts. Since May 30, THW forces have been combating the aftermath of the flood "Orinoco" in Munich, providing vital assistance to the affected communities.

During the acute phase of the flood, THW forces used high-performance pumps, such as Börger rotary piston pumps, to transport large amounts of water out of houses, underpasses, and hazardous areas. The water masses are receding very slowly, making further clearance and securing measures more difficult. Over 3,000 helpers have been involved in the operation so far, and they have pumped out several million liters of water and filled and installed tens of thousands of sandbags.

In addition to pumping out water, THW forces have been clearing streets and paths of mud, debris, and rubble using excavators, wheel loaders, and telescopic handlers. So-called cleanup groups are continuing to support the flood cleanup efforts. The situation in many flood areas is slowly improving, but the work for the THW forces is not yet over.

The THW is the federal voluntary aid organization with over 80,000 volunteers nationwide, half of whom are operational personnel. They have been providing catering for their own and other deployment forces, ensuring that helpers have the energy they need to continue their vital work.

Preparations for deployment at EURO24 are underway in Munich in parallel. The THW is deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government for technical and logistical assistance in disaster protection procedures and on behalf of UN organizations. The THW provides specialist knowledge and diverse experiences, making it a sought-after supporter for various organizations.

Oil-water mixtures that have leaked due to flooding still need to be treated. Separation facilities are operated to separate oil and water, creating usable water and reducing special waste quantities by around 90%. Around 3.5 million liters of oil-water mixture have been filtered in this way.

Heavy rain in southern Bavaria led to severe flooding, particularly affecting the government districts of Swabia, Upper and Lower Bavaria. In several counties, the flood reached the highest alert level 4. The name of the head of the THW State Association Bavaria during the flood crisis is not explicitly mentioned in the available search results.

The THW in Bavaria is still deploying around 100 personnel for the flood cleanup. The work may take a few more days, but the THW forces remain committed to helping the affected communities recover from this devastating event.
