Assessing potential sports installations at Beausie and Les Ozouets, according to ESC's review
In the picturesque island of Jersey, the future of its leisure centre, Beau Sejour, and the proposed post-16 education campus at Les Ozouets are under review. The interim report on Beau Sejour has identified the leisure centre as a "critical asset" that supports health, community links, and social value.
The review, led by the Beau Sejour Review Committee, is considering several options for new sports facilities at Les Ozouets. These options include building a new stadium or creating a multi-sport complex. Deputy Paul Montague, the President of Education, Sport & Culture, emphasizes the importance of sports for long-term wellbeing and health.
Deputy Montague also highlighted that any sports affected by changes at Beau Sejour could potentially have a home at Les Ozouets. This includes the sports hall, squash, and netball courts, which may be reconfigured or repurposed.
Meanwhile, the first phase of the redevelopment of Les Ozouets into a post-16 education campus is progressing on-time and within budget. The sixth form centre at Les Ozouets includes a standalone sixth form centre, and the student population numbers and long-term population forecasts will be considered for future plans at the site.
However, the funding for the second phase of Les Ozouets redevelopment, which includes a sports block and outdoor sporting facilities, has not yet been approved by the States. Deputy Marc Leadbeater questioned if the main hall at Beau Sejour might be reduced in size, affecting sports clubs.
The States are also planning to engage with the private sector to find solutions to protect sports. In the interim, the sixth form centre has been temporarily relocated to La Mare de Carteret high school from Les Varendes.
As the review progresses, the focus will shift towards ensuring services and facilities remain sustainable. The next phase will evaluate all options for the sixth form centre at Les Ozouets, with the new Education Committee taking the lead.
In conclusion, the review into Beau Sejour and the redevelopment of Les Ozouets are crucial steps towards shaping the future of sports, education, and community facilities in Jersey. The decisions made will have a significant impact on the island's long-term wellbeing and social value.
