Assessment Initiated on the Historic Exterior of Kaufhof Building: Anticipating Its Future

The historic sandstone facade of the former Kaufhof building in Offenbach's pedestrian zone, dating back to 1907, will be the subject of an upcoming geological investigation. This investigation, led by Dr. Anette Ritter-Hoell, CEO of RITTER Stone GmbH, is aimed at clarifying the preservation state of the sandstone facade and deciding on a possible restoration.

Dr. Ritter-Hoell, an expert in the field known for her work in the preservation of historic facades, will conduct the investigation on November 27. She will use a cherry picker to access the exposed part of the facade for analysis. The focus of the analysis will be on the type of sandstone and any potential damages, particularly the effects of the metal anchors used to attach the aluminum panels.

The partial opening of the facade for the investigation will take place on November 27, and for safety reasons, pedestrian access is strictly prohibited. The area in front of the Kaufhof building will be temporarily closed on this day.

The renovation project of the historic sandstone of the former Kaufhof facade in Offenbach was initiated by the company Offenbacher Projektentwicklung GmbH. After the inspection, Dr. Ritter-Hoell will create a comprehensive expert report. The expert report from the investigation will serve as a basis to decide whether and to what extent a renovation or restoration is possible.

It is important to note that the costs will play a crucial role in the decision-making process. The renovation of the building, initiated by Station Mitte GmbH, a subsidiary of GBO Offenbach, has sparked a call on social media to restore the original sandstone facade.

A geological investigation will be conducted to determine the condition and extent of the intact sandstone facade. The goal of the investigation is to provide a clear understanding of the current state of the facade and to make informed decisions regarding its future.
