Assistance: Support extended from Nordhorn and Coevorden to Chuhuiv
Volunteer Drivers Deliver Aid to Ukrainian City of Chuhuiv
In a heartwarming display of solidarity, a six-member volunteer driver group delivered much-needed aid supplies to the Ukrainian partner city of Chuhuiv in January 2025. The delivery was made in response to the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
The aid project was made possible by the willingness of citizens to donate and the commitment of these volunteer drivers. In October 2024, a solidarity concert was held in Nordhorn, Germany, as part of the "Local Time Germany" event series, which collected over 102,000 euros in donations. These donations were used to purchase aid supplies, including two vehicles, tools, and power generators.
The aid delivery was a significant undertaking, especially considering the winter conditions at the Polish-Ukrainian border. The volunteers braved the cold to personally hand over the supplies at the border, where they were received by Mayor Galyna Minayeva of Chuhuiv.
Mayor Minayeva expressed her gratitude for the material and emotional support received, stating that the helpers have given strength, encouragement, and a strong feeling of not being alone. She also wrote a letter of thanks, addressing it to the cities of Nordhorn and Coevorden.
The vehicles and equipment delivered by Nordhorn and Coevorden are now in use with the city's emergency repair brigade in Chuhuiv. One of the most notable uses of the aid supplies was the successful securing of the central hospital in Chuhuiv after a heavy drone attack. The provided means enabled the hospital to maintain operations within a day.
The volunteer drivers' commitment significantly sped up the delivery of aid to people in Chuhuiv. Thanks also go to Mayor Thomas Berling of Nordhorn for his leadership in organising the aid project and to all citizens who donated, enabling this act of kindness.
Despite the anonymity of the six-person volunteer driver team that delivered the aid goods at the Polish-Ukrainian border, their impact is undeniable. Their selfless act serves as a reminder of the power of community spirit and the difference that can be made when people come together to help those in need.
