Asylum hotel in Epping experiences disruption as man detained for throwing flares

In the past few weeks, multiple demonstrations have taken place outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, with the latest incident occurring amidst anti-social scenes. The incident in question involved the lighting of flares, an act that Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow has stated poses a clear and real risk to anyone nearby.

Following the incident, a 22-year-old man from Epping was arrested on suspicion of inciting racial hatred and racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage, in connection with allegations that a banner had been set alight on Friday, August 29. The man remains in custody.

Essex Police has made 32 arrests in connection with incidents of disorder in the area, with 21 people already charged. In addition, a man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in Epping.

In response to the ongoing disturbances, a dispersal order has been put in place in Epping city centre and surrounding areas, including Coopersale, Ivy Chimneys, and Steward's Green. The dispersal order, which was in effect until 6am on Saturday, aims to prevent any further anti-social behaviour and maintain public safety.

The dispersal order comes following a wave of protests last week, which led to the Court of Appeals reversing a decision to close an asylum hotel. The name of the council bringing the case of the Bell Hotel before the Supreme Court is the Epping Forest District Council, which has stated its intention to take the fight to close the hotel to the highest court in the land.

Essex Police has announced that it will have a significant policing presence in the area over the weekend to ensure public safety and maintain order. A video circulating on social media shows a person, whose face is covered, throwing several flares over metal fences, highlighting the need for increased police presence.

The demonstrations in Epping are in response to an asylum seeker being charged with the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. The details of the case are still under investigation, and the public is urged to allow the legal process to run its course.

As the situation continues to unfold, the community of Epping remains on edge, hoping for a return to peace and order in the town. The Epping Forest District Council and Essex Police continue to work together to address the ongoing issues and ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Epping.
