Reduction in New Refugee Arrivals in Saxony-Anhalt - Asylum seeker intake declines once more in Saxony-Anhalt

Saxony-Anhalt, a state in eastern Germany, has seen a significant drop in asylum application numbers over the past year. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the trend began in June 2025, and the numbers have continued to decrease throughout the year.

As of the end of August 2025, the state has received 1,953 new applications for asylum, which is 44% fewer than in the same period last year. This decrease is also evident in the month of August, with only 214 new applications this year, a 60% drop compared to the same month in 2023 (512 applications).

Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) has attributed this decreasing trend to the migration turnaround, a term she used to describe the shift in migration patterns. She further stated that the turnaround is in full swing.

The state's reliance on two locations for the accommodation of asylum seekers is a new development. By the end of 2025, the Magdeburg reception center in Breitscheidstraße will close, and the city of Stendal will become the main reception center. A new state reception facility (LAE Stendal) is planned to be fully operational with up to 1,000 bed spaces by the end of the year. Halberstadt will also serve as a location for accommodation.

Several satellite facilities in Saxony-Anhalt have already been closed, and the Magdeburg city is mentioned in relation to the closure of a reception center.

The decreasing asylum application numbers are providing relief to the municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt. This trend is a positive sign for the state, indicating a possible stabilisation in migration patterns. The Ministry of the Interior made the announcement regarding the number of new seekers of protection in Saxony-Anhalt for the year so far. The decrease in asylum applications in August 2025 was also announced by the Ministry in Magdeburg.

This change in migration patterns is a significant development in Saxony-Anhalt and Germany as a whole, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds in the coming months and years.
