"At a distance I find unsettlingly near."
In the heart of Italy, the Monza circuit played host to the Italian Grand Prix, and McLaren found themselves in a challenging yet promising position.
Lando Norris, the sole McLaren representative in this race, led the timing sheets in Free Practice 2, recording the fastest lap of the session. However, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari came close, finishing just 0.083 seconds slower.
Despite the promising start, McLaren knew they would have problems in Monza, given the track's low downforce conditions. This is a stark contrast to what they experienced at Zandvoort, where they typically enjoy a significant advantage.
Norris acknowledged the team's struggles in low downforce situations, but expressed optimism. He believes that with some small improvements, McLaren can be in a better position. The driver was pleased with the team's progress from Free Practice 1 to Free Practice 2, noting it as a positive sign.
However, the competition is closing the gap on McLaren, making the race conditions more challenging. If a driver finds themselves in dirty air or certain conditions, a two-stop race is still possible for McLaren.
Norris completed some laps on the medium tires at the end of Free Practice 2, expressing uncertainty about the pace but feeling it might be better than last year. The gap between Norris and his pursuers is worryingly close, indicating a tightly contested race.
As the Italian Grand Prix continues, McLaren and Norris will be working hard to maintain their position and potentially secure a podium finish.
