At the Africa Climate Summit, the Federal Government asserts that providing climate aid is mutually beneficial for our own interests

"At Africa's climate summit, the German government acknowledges that providing climate aid is mutually beneficial for both them and the continent" - At the Africa climate summit, the Federal Government asserted that investing in climate aid benefits us as well.

The Africa Climate Summit, organised by Ethiopia and the African Union, is of great importance to Germany and Europe, according to a joint statement. The summit, which will take place in Addis Ababa, aims to establish a unified African negotiating position for the upcoming UN climate conference in Belém, Brazil.

Germany remains committed to supporting Africa in its efforts to combat climate change. Jochen Flasbarth, the State Secretary for Climate Protection in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, reiterated this commitment. The federal German minister participating in the negotiations at the Africa Climate Summit is Parliamentary State Secretary Dr. Bärbel Kofler from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), alongside State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth representing climate protection.

The climate crisis in Africa has massive consequences for various global aspects, including international migration, food security, and energy markets. By supporting the expansion of renewable energies in Africa, Germany aims to reduce Africa's dependence on climate-damaging fossil fuels and create opportunities. This shift could potentially lift more than 45 million people out of extreme poverty by 2035, as ambitious climate and development goals in Africa could help reduce migration pressures from Africa.

However, attempts to persuade African states to embark on new oil, gas, and coal projects are undermining global climate goals, according to German development and environmental organisations Misereor and Germanwatch. They urge the Federal Government of Germany to expand its climate aid despite budget constraints. Every euro for climate protection, according to these organisations, prevents multiple damages here and there.

The organisations also warned of the increasing influence of the fossil lobby on Africa. They emphasised that the expansion of renewable energies in Africa, as supported by Germany, reduces Africa's reliance on climate-damaging fossil fuels. The climate aid provided to Africa by Germany and other countries could create social and economic opportunities.

The Africa Climate Summit is a significant step towards a unified African stance on climate change and a chance for Germany and Europe to reaffirm their commitment to supporting Africa in its fight against the climate crisis.
