China Hosts SCO Summit, Welcoming Over 30 World Leaders

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is currently holding a two-day summit in China, with approximately 30 world leaders and heads of international organisations in attendance. This summit, described as "one of the most important activities this year for China's head-of-state diplomacy and home-ground diplomacy", is being billed as the "largest in SCO history" by China's foreign ministry.

Among the notable attendees are Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly, who was warmly welcomed by the Chinese leader.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his opening remarks, stated that China is a "source of stability and certainty" amid global changes. He called for China and Egypt, as well as all SCO member states, to make greater contributions to maintaining world peace and stability. Xi Jinping also emphasized the need for international cooperation for peace, stability, development, and prosperity.

Speaking on the importance of multilateralism, Xi Jinping said, "History teaches that multilateralism, solidarity, and cooperation are the right way to address global challenges." He further stressed the need for both China and Egypt to promote global development and prosperity.

Analysts are closely watching this summit to see how Beijing positions itself as a global power amid rising geopolitical tensions. The SCO summit is taking place with the aim of revitalising the authority and vitality of the United Nations.
