Athlete Oscar Coggins from Hong Kong shares his strategy for triumph in the National Games
Hong Kong Triathletes Gear Up for National Games
The Hong Kong triathlon scene is abuzz with anticipation as local athletes Oscar Coggins and Robin Elg, along with potential teammates, prepare for the National Games in November. The event, set to take place at the Central Harbourfront, promises to be a thrilling spectacle.
Both Coggins and Elg have shown impressive form, finishing second and fourth respectively in the Asia Triathlon Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey. Their training in the Pyrenees, joined by British Olympic medallist Samuel Dickinson and Jack Willis, has proven to be a successful formula.
The three-man squad for the Hong Kong team is yet to be finalised, but Coggins, Elg, and either Jason Ng Tai-long or another athlete are strong contenders. Ng is being considered for a spot, having shown potential in previous races.
Coggins, optimistic about his selection, expressed his excitement, "I'm looking forward to representing Hong Kong in the National Games. The training camp in mainland China will help us prepare for the competition." Elg, who finished fifth in the same race in Istanbul, shares his teammate's sentiment, believing they are strong contenders for individual medals.
Elg and Coggins spent approximately six weeks training at altitude in the Pyrenees, followed by a short rest and another training camp, possibly at altitude in mainland China. This rigorous training regimen is aimed at ensuring peak performance for the National Games.
It's important to note that neither Coggins nor Elg have automatically qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. However, their strong performances in the Asia Triathlon Championships and the upcoming National Games could secure them a place in the Olympic team.
The Hong Kong team for the National Games already includes Wong Tsz-to, who has been a consistent performer in local and international races. The three triathletes possibly nominated for the National Games in Hong Kong in November are Huang Jinchang, Gao Lin, and Ye Yiqi.
As the countdown to the National Games begins, the triathlon community in Hong Kong is eagerly awaiting the performances of Coggins, Elg, and their potential teammates. The event promises to be a showcase of the best of Hong Kong's triathlon talent.
