Germany's Basketball Team Overcomes Challenges to Advance in EuroBasket
Germany's basketball team, led by Captain Dennis Schröder, secured a hard-fought victory in the EuroBasket semifinals against Portugal with a score of 85:58. The World Champions' journey to the final was not without its obstacles, as they struggled to find their rhythm and had to significantly improve their performance to return to the form shown in the group stage.
Alex Mumbru, the national coach, returned to the sideline for the first time during the EM after missing the group stage due to illness. His presence was a boost for the team, providing them with more energy and motivation, as stated by Assistant Coach Andreas Obst before the game.
The game against Portugal was a challenging one for Germany, with Head Coach Alan Ibrahimagic acknowledging the tough competition. Schröder admitted that the team lacked initial aggression, but demonstrated the depth of their squad as everyone who played contributed to the win.
Germany started sloppily and was quickly down 2:7 against Portugal. However, they turned the game around by the end of the first quarter (17:12), but there was still no sign of the brilliance shown in the group stage. The team continued to struggle from beyond the arc, with only one out of 18 three-point attempts finding the net in the first half.
Despite these challenges, Schröder and Franz Wagner were the top scorers with 16 points each. Maodo Lo sank the second German three-pointer late in the third quarter, but Germany led by just one point going into the final period (52:51).
The final quarter was particularly stressful for the World Champions, but they managed to pull away and secure the victory. The coaching duo of Mumbru and Ibrahimagic shared their responsibilities during the game, with Mumbru taking a more active role and leading the training on Friday.
Looking ahead, Germany has advanced to the EM quarterfinals and will face either Italy or Slovenia, featuring NBA superstar Luka Doncic, in the next round. The NBA star expected to play for the German basketball team in the EuroBasket 2025 semifinal is Schröder, who is a leading figure and captain of the team, alongside other NBA players like Franz Wagner and Tristan da Silva.
Ibrahimagic acknowledged that the team needed a bit more relaxation during halftime, and it is clear that Germany will need to continue to work hard to maintain their position as one of the top teams in EuroBasket.
