In the ongoing European Championship (EM) in Finland and Latvia, national coach Alex Mumbru has temporarily stepped back from his duties due to health issues. His assistant, Alan Ibrahimagic, has taken over the reins during this period.

Mumbru, who is not at 100% due to his health problems, was admitted to hospital in Tampere just before the start of the EM with an "acute abdomen." Despite this setback, he returned to the sidelines for the round of 16 game against Portugal. However, he has since decided to step back, allowing Ibrahimagic to assume the role of assistant coach and take responsibility on the sideline.

Ibrahimagic, who usually serves as an assistant coach, has been entrusted with the additional responsibility during the EM. Mumbru, however, remains the national coach for the European Championship and will return to his role when he is fully fit. In the meantime, Mumbru and Ibrahimagic have shared coaching duties.

Maodo Lo, on behalf of the team, stated that Mumbru is still the national coach at the EM. The entire team has shown solidarity with Mumbru and Ibrahimagic, gathering behind them at a press conference in the controversial team hotel.

The German team will face Slovenia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Luka Doncic will be playing for Slovenia in this highly anticipated match. The World Cup, scheduled for 2027 in Qatar, will be the next major tournament for both teams.

Prior to the EM, Mumbru slightly adjusted the playing style of the national team this summer. Despite his absence, the team has shown resilience and determination, reflecting the strong bond between the players and their coach.

The next competitive game for the national team will be in November in the World Cup qualifiers. Until then, the focus remains on Mumbru's recovery and the team's preparations for the quarterfinals. The entire German basketball community wishes Mumbru a speedy recovery and sends their support to the team.
