Headline: TRAFFIC Set to Play Key Role at CoP20, Reinforcing Commitment to Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Wildlife Trade
The 20th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP20) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is set to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from November 24 to December 5, 2025. This significant event brings together 185 countries with a shared goal: regulating international trade to protect threatened species such as sharks, African hornbills, hyenas, vultures, and certain flora.
TRAFFIC, a leading non-governmental organisation working on wildlife trade, will participate in CoP20 as a key technical advisor and observer organisation. The organisation's engagement aims to reinforce its role as a trusted scientific authority, strengthen partnerships, and enhance the effectiveness of CITES in conserving biodiversity.
TRAFFIC will submit a policy position paper on selected CoP20 agenda items, contributing its scientific expertise, conservation tools, and policy guidance to support evidence-based decision-making at the conference. The organisation's work at CoP20 will focus on freshwater species and marine species.
In addition, TRAFFIC will host side-events at the conference, providing a platform for discussions on various topics related to wildlife trade and conservation. The organisation's involvement at CoP20 will cover topics such as Eastern Europe and Central Asia biodiversity, business, finance, and economics, freshwater and water security, governance - law and rights, protected areas and land use, livelihoods and sustainable use, and the Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, as well as the Species Survival Commission.
TRAFFIC's work at CoP20 will also involve influencing the adoption and amendment of CITES listings, decisions, and resolutions. The organisation will submit information documents at the conference, providing valuable insights and recommendations.
Moreover, TRAFFIC will mobilise its Species Survival Commission (SSC) experts to provide real-time scientific advice and coordinate messaging at CoP20. The organisation will also submit reports on African and Asian rhinoceroses (CoP20 Doc. 84 Annex 3), and reports on pangolins (CoP20 Doc. 79.1), both commissioned by the CITES Secretariat.
Lastly, TRAFFIC will publish analyses of listing proposals on 19 September, and promote the application of its knowledge products, including the Red List of Threatened Species, at CoP20. The organisation's advance sustainable use and trade regulation in line with its Nature 2030 Programme and World Conservation Congress Resolutions is another policy priority at CoP20.
TRAFFIC's active participation in CoP20 underscores its commitment to strengthening global efforts in biodiversity conservation and sustainable wildlife trade under the CITES Convention. The organisation looks forward to working closely with other technical advisor and observer organisations, governments, and other stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of CITES decisions and the protection of threatened species.
