The human hearing range is generally between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. However, higher sample rates can provide additional headroom for certain audio processing tasks, such as time stretching and pitch shifting.

Modern digital audio production can operate at sample rates higher than the CD-era's 44.1 kHz, with some converters capable of 192 kHz. Common sample rates in music production include 44.1 kHz (used in CDs), 48 kHz (standard for video and film), and 96 kHz (high-resolution audio).

Consumer audio hardware often struggles to maintain high sample rates throughout the sound reproduction process. As a result, choosing the right sample rate depends on the music's requirements and the production environment's limitations.

48 kHz offers greater quality than CD and is commonly used for film and TV audio. On the other hand, 44.1 kHz, the sample rate used in CDs, remains a standard for audio quality and compatibility. Higher rates like 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz can be used but increase CPU load and file size with diminishing audible benefits.

When starting a new DAW project, the best sample rate for music production is not always straightforward. It depends on factors like the project's specific requirements and the equipment used.

Sampling means taking snapshots or "samples" of the continuous analog waveform at regular intervals. Higher sample rates provide greater frequency response and better resolution, allowing for more detailed and accurate representation of the original sound source.
