Augmented job market in Leipzig, August 2025: initial minimal rise in joblessness

In August 2025, the Leipzig Employment Agency reported a decrease in unemployment, with the unemployment rate remaining steady at 8.8%. The federal government reported over 3 million unemployed nationwide on the same date.

Locally, the number of unemployed people in the Leipzig Employment Agency's district stood at 30,928, a decrease of 55 from the previous month. The number of households receiving basic security (Jobcenter) decreased by 1% compared to the previous year, to a total of 31,168. The number of people receiving unemployment benefits also decreased by 2% over the same period, to a total of 39,276.

The total number of applicants for apprenticeships or dual studies with the Leipzig Employment Agency's career guidance service in August 2025 was 2,438, an increase from the previous year. Around 83% of businesses seeking employees in the Leipzig Employment Agency's district are already covered.

The agency reported a positive trend in the number of training positions, with a total of 2,454 training positions available in August 2025, an increase from the previous year. About 80% of job seekers in the district have found a perspective, according to the agency.

However, the biggest problem on the local labor market is still the entry of young people aged 15 to 24, with youth unemployment rising by 2.1% in August 2025. A total of 596 young people with a migration background applied for apprenticeships or dual studies with the career guidance service in August 2025, with 480 still actively looking for an opportunity.

Steffen Leonhardi, the CEO of the Leipzig Employment Agency, stated that the labor market remains challenging despite seasonal stability. He emphasised that the majority of young people who applied for apprenticeships or dual studies in the current career guidance year have completed school, with 48% having done so recently.

By August 2025, a total of 1,914 young people had already decided on an offer or found an alternative, according to the agency. In the SGB III scheme (Employment Agency) in August 2025, there were 12,354 unemployed people, an increase from the previous month and the previous year. In the SGB II scheme (Jobcenter) in August 2025, there were 18,574 unemployed people, a decrease from the previous month but an increase from the previous year.

Through the carriers of basic security (Jobcenter) in August 2025, 60% of all unemployed people were cared for. The Leipzig Employment Agency reported 1,049 new vacancies in August 2025, an increase from the previous month but a decrease from the same month the previous year.
