August midpoint sees Seneca Lake hosting one Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) amidst steady water conditions

The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association has successfully kept harmful algal blooms (HABs) in check for the past week, according to a report by FingerLakes1.com, the region's leading all-digital news publication.

The ongoing conservation efforts to monitor and manage HABs on Seneca Lake have proven effective, with only one HAB reported from August 8-14. The group's efforts are particularly noteworthy as lake users are reminded to be vigilant for sudden HAB appearances, especially when water is warm and calm.

The current status of HABs on Seneca Lake was recently reported by the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association. On August 14, turbidity was at 0.526 NTU, which falls within the "good" range, and dissolved oxygen levels were at 106% saturation. The surface water temperature on the same day was 77°F.

In a bid to protect the lake further, the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association treated 30 hemlock trees in Hector to combat the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. This treatment combined quick-acting and long-lasting protection without contaminating waterways.

The public is invited to attend the annual meeting and volunteer recognition hosted by the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association on September 11. The event will take place at The Oasis @ Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards in Hector, a picturesque location that has been a staple of the community since its founding in 1998.

At the annual meeting, residents can learn more about the association's lake protection projects and the current state of Seneca Lake. The meeting is an excellent opportunity for residents to engage with the association and ask questions about the lake's health and conservation efforts.

Suspected HABs can be reported to the DEC or by emailing [email protected]. Lake users are urged to avoid water that resembles pea soup, spilled paint, or green streaks near shore.

More information about the event can be found at senecalake.org. The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association looks forward to seeing you there!
