Austrian individual, known as Elk Emil, disrupts crucial railroad network in Austria

In the heart of Lower Austria, the city of St. Pölten was recently disrupted by an unexpected visitor - a young moose named Emil. According to the St. Pölten Animal Protection Association, this three-year-old moose, believed to have come from either the Czech Republic or Poland, could panic and cause accidents if stressed.

Emil's migration through eastern Austria disrupted the operation of the Westbahn line, a crucial railway that connects Vienna with western Austria, Germany, and Western Europe. The closure occurred just before 1:00 AM on Sunday, resulting in the temporary shutdown of one of Austria's main railway routes.

The incident caused a stir, with an ÖBB spokesperson reporting the news and Emil capturing media and public attention for about two and a half weeks. The moose was spotted on a railway embankment of the Westbahn line, prompting immediate action.

A shunting locomotive was used to approach Emil in an attempt to encourage it to move. However, no further attempts were made after the initial encounter. The safety of all involved was a priority during the incident.

The St. Pölten Animal Protection Association, known as the Tierschutzverein St. Pölten, urged people to keep their distance from the escaped moose. They warned that a stressed moose can panic and cause accidents. The organisation emphasised the importance of the moose's safety, along with that of all those involved.

The disruption in St. Pölten was not the only impact. The Westbahn line was reopened just after 5:00 AM, more than four hours after the closure. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the need for caution when dealing with such situations.

Interestingly, Austria does not have a native moose population, making Emil's visit all the more unusual. Despite the disruption, the city and the railway line have since returned to normal, leaving many to wonder where Emil might wander next.
