Authorities are scrutinizing a 22-year-old individual accused of fatal assault in Hamburg-St. Pauli and urging potential witnesses to come forward.
In the early hours of Sunday, August 23, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded at Hamburg-St. Pauli's Harald-Stender-Platz. According to police statements, a 39-year-old Dortmund fan suffered life-threatening injuries during the aftermath of a football match between FC St. Pauli and Borussia Dortmund.
The incident took place on the Millerntor stadium plaza, where a witness reported seeing a 22-year-old Hamburg resident push the 39-year-old, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground, losing consciousness. Bystanders immediately provided first aid and alerted emergency services.
The 39-year-old was transported to a hospital but tragically passed away the following afternoon due to his injuries. The suspect was found and provisionally arrested at an address in the Eimsbüttel district.
Initially, the investigation was handled by the Criminal Investigation Department (LKA 26), but as the case evolved, it was taken over by the Homicide Commission (LKA 41) in cooperation with the public prosecutor's office.
It is alleged that the 39-year-old was intoxicated and was repeatedly approaching a group of people in a harassing manner. The 22-year-old suspect pushed the 39-year-old away in response to his behaviour. However, the exact circumstances leading to the incident are still under investigation.
Witnesses who observed the incident on the stadium forecourt and/or have other information are asked to contact the police's hotline or visit a police station. The suspect was released after police measures were completed, in agreement with the public prosecutor's office, as there were no grounds for detention.
