Authorities Directly Drive Drivers Humorously Back on Course
In a unique blend of humour and traffic safety, the Pforzheim police have taken the internet by storm with their recent Facebook post. The post, which has garnered over 140,000 likes and around 10,000 comments, has sparked a nationwide discussion on highway etiquette.
The post, under the motto "humorously. safely. drive.", was initially related to the investigative detention hours in May 2022. However, it quickly evolved into a lesson on proper driving etiquette, reminding drivers about the importance of giving way and avoiding middle lane hogging.
The author of the post, a member of the Pforzheim police's social media team, has been praised by some for their creative approach. Suggestions of awards and a pay raise have been flooding in, while others have taken a more serious tone, reminding those who didn't understand the humor that violations of the right-of-way rule can be penalized.
One Facebook user even playfully invited others to join the group of considerate truck drivers, highlighting the post's impact on promoting safe and courteous driving.
According to traffic regulations, it is generally possible to drive as far to the right as possible, not just in case of oncoming traffic. On three-lane highways, the middle lane is to be used temporarily, but there's an exception for continuous use of the median strip if there is occasionally a vehicle on the right lane. The ADAC recommends switching back to the right lane if it is free for more than 20 seconds.
The Pforzheim police's use of humour in addressing serious issues has been well-received. Christian Schulze, a member of the social media team, stated that people have written to them saying they now think of the police when they're on the highway and drive over to the right with a smile.
The fine for middle lane hogging can reach up to 80 euros and a point in Flensburg, a German driving licence penalty point system. The Pforzheim police's post in Auto Bild this week has served as a timely reminder of the importance of considerate driving and adhering to traffic regulations.
