Auto glass fixes continue to lead repair submissions

Cars, in their increasing digitalization, continue to be predominantly hindered by traditional, analog issues: the leading cause remains as vehicle recall due to mechanical problems.

In 2024, the automotive landscape in Germany saw a significant shift, as reported by LeasePlan Germany, a company set to be renamed Ayvens following its merger with ALD. The report highlighted several key trends, including a decrease in accidents, an increase in repair costs, and the leading cause of vehicle repair claims being windshield damage.

The number of vehicle thefts halved in 2024, with only 20 cases reported. This drop can be attributed to the deterrence of modern tracking systems, resulting in a near disappearance of theft of navigation systems. The majority of newer systems are now built-in rather than added on, making them less susceptible to theft.

Comprehensive coverage claims remained stable at around 57,000 cases in 2024. Loss of control, rear-end collisions, or other collisions accounted for 13% of these cases, making them the third most common comprehensive coverage claim. However, the implementation of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in new vehicles since mid-2024 has resulted in a reduction of rear-end collisions by 20%. This reduction, coupled with the decrease in theft, has led to a 14% drop in loss-of-control incidents.

Parking damages were the second most common comprehensive coverage claim in 2024, accounting for 23% of cases. Thankfully, the implementation of ADAS has also led to a decrease in parking-related damages by 13%.

The high number of windshield issues is partially attributed to increased traffic and widespread roadwork. The 2024 damage report by LeasePlan Germany shows that windshield damage is the leading cause of vehicle repair claims in Germany, accounting for 52% of partial coverage claims, with windshield replacement accounting for 52% and windshield repair accounting for 13%.

Stone chipping is a result of insufficient distances between cars in construction areas. Despite the reduction in accidents, the average repair cost for comprehensive coverage claims rose by about 15% year on year, to €4,600 per vehicle. This increase in cost, coupled with the high number of windshield issues, paints a picture of a costly year for vehicle repairs in Germany.

Other notable findings in the report include 5% of partial coverage claims being due to storm or hail damage, and 2% being due to wildlife collisions. Additionally, 6% of partial coverage claims were caused by martens and other small animals gnawing through cables and other essential materials.

As we look towards the future, the merger of LeasePlan and ALD into Ayvens promises to bring further advancements in vehicle technology and safety, potentially leading to even more significant reductions in accidents and repair costs.
