Auto industry expresses concerns over potential cyber threats
The German automotive sector is facing a growing threat from cyber attacks, according to a survey by Diconium. The survey, which polled 200 cybersecurity experts and IT decision-makers in the vehicle industry, revealed that three out of four companies rate the danger of cyber attacks as "high" or "very high".
Inadequate infrastructure is the top hindrance to better protection against attacks, with 32% of respondents citing this as a major issue. A lack of suitable personnel is the second most common hindrance, with 30% of companies struggling to find the right talent to bolster their cyber defenses.
Despite these challenges, the survey also showed that the automotive sector is investing in cybersecurity. Forty-two percent of companies plan to spend on AI-assisted security analysis, while 46.7% plan to invest in better threat detection and incident response.
AI-based attack scenarios are a concern for the industry, with 14.5% of respondents mentioning them as a risk. Ransomware and malware attacks are also a worry, with 19% of companies citing them as a potential threat.
Data breaches are another concern, with 16.5% of respondents mentioning them as a risk. However, investments in secure vehicle architectures and over-the-air (OTA) update systems are less prioritized.
The survey results suggest that awareness of cyber risks in the German automotive industry has increased. This is evident in the fact that 33.7% of companies want to promote security training and awareness programs.
The survey did not provide information on the specific methods or sources of the cyber attacks mentioned. However, it did highlight that security gaps in the cloud are a major concern for the sector, with 19.5% of respondents indicating this as a risk.
The British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) experienced a cyber attack that caused a global IT outage, resulting in disruptions in production and sales. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential impact of cyber attacks on the automotive industry.
The survey did not mention any specific automotive industry companies that plan to invest in improved threat detection, incident analysis, and AI-supported security analysis. However, Stellar Cyber and WithSecure have announced plans to make such investments in the coming months.
The automotive industry remains a popular target for cyber attacks, and the survey results underscore the need for increased investment in cybersecurity measures. As the industry continues to embrace digital technologies, it is crucial that it also prioritizes cybersecurity to protect against the growing threat of cyber attacks.
