Automobile manufacturers gear up for large-scale manufacture of electric lorries
In a significant shift towards sustainable transportation, several European truck manufacturers are ramping up production of electric and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).
Last year, Volvo Trucks started series manufacturing of the Volvo FH Electric, offering a 500-kilometer range with a short charging stop. This move marks a step forward in Volvo's commitment to a more sustainable future.
Looking ahead, DAF Trucks NV is set to join the electric revolution in 2023, with the series manufacturing of the XD Electric and XF Electric vehicles, each boasting a 500-kilometer range.
Daimler Truck AG is not far behind, announcing plans to start series manufacturing of the eActros LongHaul truck, capable of a 500-kilometer range, in 2024.
Mercedes-Benz is making strides in this area as well. By 2025, they will develop and begin series production of battery-electric trucks specifically designed, including for mining, extraction, and logging. Key production components will be made in their German Aggregate-Werke at Mannheim, Kassel, and Gaggenau, with assembly starting at the Wörth am Rhein plant.
Scania Group, another major player, plans to sell electric vocational vehicles such as construction, mining, and timber trucks by 2025. They are also developing battery-powered 40-tonne trucks with a 560-kilometer range and a running time of four and a half hours between stops.
MAN Truck & Bus SE is also entering the electric fray, with plans to commence serial production of its 450-kilometer-range eTruck in an unspecified year.
Lastly, IVECO has announced it will commence serial production of the Nikola Tre BEV with a 500-kilometer range in 2023.
Moreover, multiple European manufacturers, including Daimler, Volvo, and IVECO, are planning to begin serial manufacturing of FCEVs by the end of the decade. This promising development underscores the industry's commitment to a greener future.
