Autonomous Buses Set to Debut in Chengdu

A groundbreaking pilot project has been initiated in the city of Chengdu, China, as the Chengdu Public Transport Group and CRRC Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. (CRRC EV) have collaborated to introduce 6-metre L4 autonomous minibuses into regular commercial services.

These minibuses, developed and manufactured by CRRC EV, boast an impressive passenger capacity of up to 16 and support both manual and driverless modes. The vehicles are equipped with onboard intelligent driving systems, featuring LiDAR and camera systems, a high-performance domain controller, and AI capabilities.

The partnership between the two companies has resulted in China's first guidelines for system integration testing of autonomous bus systems. These guidelines are specific to the testing of autonomous bus systems and aim to provide a framework for assessing the safety and efficiency of these innovative vehicles.

The autonomous buses are currently undergoing road tests, and the guidelines are a significant step towards their deployment in Chengdu. The guidelines are part of a larger partnership between Chengdu Public Transport Group and CRRC EV, which aims to develop a full lifecycle management and technology system for autonomous buses in commercial operation.

Residents in Chengdu can look forward to the introduction of these autonomous minibuses shortly. The project represents a collaborative effort between Chengdu Public Transport Group and CRRC EV, demonstrating their commitment to the advancement of autonomous transportation technology.

Zhu Qiang, the head of the autonomous vehicle department at CRRC Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd., is involved in the pilot project in Chengdu. The guidelines are not limited to the operation of autonomous buses within the project but are also related to the operation of autonomous buses in regular commercial services.

This initiative marks an important milestone in the development and deployment of autonomous bus systems not only in Chengdu but also in China as a whole. As the testing of these vehicles progresses, we can expect to see more advancements in the field of autonomous transportation technology.
