Autonomous holon shuttle makes its debut in Hamburg
Hamburg is set to take a leading role in Europe's autonomous driving revolution in public transport. The city, which already operates autonomous ID Buzz AD vehicles from Moia, is making significant strides towards this goal.
As part of the Alike project, funded by the German federal government with €26 million, Hamburg aims to expand its traditional public transport system with flexible and autonomous offers in the long term. The project, announced by Sascha Meyer, CEO of MOIA, aims to make Hamburg a European pioneer in efficient, flexible, and autonomous public transport.
The first autonomous shuttle of the Holon Urban type has arrived in Hamburg, and up to 20 of these vehicles are planned to operate in the city in the future. The Holon Urban shuttle, 5 meters long and accommodating 15 passengers, can reach a top speed of 60 km/h.
The city is currently building operating bases in Barmbek for both Moia's ID Buzz AD vehicles and the Holon Shuttles. The Holon Urban shuttle will be tested in Hamburg between Stadtpark, Elbe, Schlump, and Wandsbek later this summer.
Initially, the focus will be on gathering experience with smaller vehicles before moving towards establishing autonomous driving in regular service. The ultimate goal is to introduce vehicles that can drive completely autonomously across Europe for the first time.
Sascha Meyer was a guest at the Future Hamburg Talks, where he announced that Hamburg will test the first driverless Holon shuttle starting in late summer 2025, with the aim of providing an on-demand autonomous public transport service from 2026.
Over half a billion euros have been allocated for Hamburg's mobility, demonstrating the city's commitment to shaping the future of transport. For more information about the autonomous shuttle project, please visit hochbahn.de.
