Autonomous vehicle manufacturer, AutoDrive, has discontinued operations.
Stellantis, the automotive giant, has announced a strategic realignment that includes the termination of its partnership with Amazon for the SmartCockpit and a postponement in the market introduction of its Level-3 automation system, AutoDrive.
The termination of the Amazon partnership and the delay in the market introduction of AutoDrive are part of Stellantis' strategic realignment, which marks a new focus on external partners for certain functions. The company believes that this shift will enable them to concentrate more on core functions and reduce costs associated with in-house development.
In February, Stellantis unveiled software for partially automated driving. However, the development of Level-3 systems has proven to be challenging and costly, with buyers showing little interest so far. The delay in the market introduction of AutoDrive is due to the combination of these high costs and technical hurdles.
In addition to the termination of the Amazon partnership, Stellantis has also announced a cooperation with aiMotive, a software developer working with the AutoDrive program. This partnership will be strengthened as part of Stellantis' new focus on external partners.
Stellantis plans to enter partnerships with AI companies, such as Mistral AI, to support the development of Level-3 autonomous vehicle technology. While specific external partners for Level-3 technology have not been detailed publicly, this move underscores Stellantis' commitment to leveraging external expertise to advance its autonomous driving capabilities.
The delay in the market introduction of AutoDrive does not signal a lack of readiness in the technology for series production. Stellantis maintains that the technology for Level-3 automation systems is indeed ready for series production. However, the decision to postpone the market introduction was made due to insufficient demand for the technology.
The effort to develop Level-3 systems does not seem to be in proportion to the expected market acceptance. With this strategic realignment, Stellantis aims to strike a balance between technological advancement and market demand, ensuring a sustainable and profitable future in the autonomous vehicle industry.
The delay in the market introduction of AutoDrive was reported by Handelsblatt. Despite this setback, Stellantis remains optimistic about the future of autonomous driving and is committed to delivering innovative solutions to its customers.
