Autonomous vehicles company Waymo granted permission to pilot self-driving cars within New York City limits
Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is set to expand its operations in the United States, with New York City being the latest addition to its list. The company has received approval to test self-driving vehicles in the city, marking its first official foray into local streets.
Up to eight electric vehicles equipped with Waymo's self-driving systems will be deployed for testing. These vehicles will navigate parts of Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn, as the company embarks on a significant step in its nationwide expansion.

Beyond New York City, Waymo has announced its intention to enter ten new cities in 2025. Notably, the company has partnered with Uber to bring its self-driving vehicles to Atlanta. Additionally, Waymo plans to expand its robotaxi service from San Francisco into Silicon Valley and parts of Los Angeles.
Waymo's presence in New York City is not entirely new, as the company sent vehicles to manually collect mapping data across the city in 2021. However, the upcoming testing marks a significant milestone, as Waymo's autonomous driving systems will officially be tested on local streets in the city.
