Apple Hill Season Kicks Off in El Dorado County

The Apple Hill region, nestled in the picturesque landscape of El Dorado County, is once again welcoming visitors for its annual autumn celebration. Originating with just 16 apple ranches in 1964, the region has grown to over 50 family-run farms, offering a unique and charming experience for all.

This season, Apple Hill extends beyond just apples, providing a wide range of autumn activities for visitors to enjoy. From apple picking and pie-making to donut-eating and wine-tasting, there's something for everyone.

One of the most beloved spots in Apple Hill is Rainbow Orchards, where Christa Campbell has been frying apple cider donuts since 1977. Visitors return year after year, including multiple generations of families, to savour these delicious treats.

The early part of the season, which is now, tends to be quieter compared to October, making it an ideal time for a leisurely visit. However, many families are surprised by the amount of fruit on the trees and are excited to pick their own.

The harvest this year at Apple Hill is expected to be strong due to cooler summer weather, ensuring a bountiful supply of sweeter apples and more varieties ready to pick earlier in the season. Stephanie Maltbie from Apple Ridge Farms anticipates up to six apple varieties to be ready in just a few weeks.

For many, the taste of fall at Apple Hill is a tradition that keeps them coming back year after year. Visitors from San Jose and Davis are noticing a particularly bountiful harvest this season.

The Apple Hill season officially begins on Labor Day Weekend. For 2025, Labor Day falls on September 2, so the season starts around that date. October brings the biggest crowds with fall festivals in full swing. Nearly 1.9 million visitors flock to Apple Hill annually to partake in these festivities and enjoy the autumn atmosphere.

Stephanie Maltbie suggests planning a trip to Apple Hill earlier rather than later. Campbell, who enjoys watching families return year after year to Apple Hill, agrees, adding that the earlier part of the season offers a more relaxed and peaceful experience. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning regular, Apple Hill promises a memorable fall experience.
