Ballygunner Claims Impressive Victory in Waterford Senior Hurling Final

In a dominant display of hurling, Ballygunner secured their 12-year run of successful finals with a convincing win over Mount Sion in the Waterford Senior Hurling Final. The final scoreline read 2-35 to 1-16 in favour of Ballygunner, marking the biggest margin of victory in their impressive streak.

The match, held at Walsh Park, began with a quick start for Ballygunner, as Dessie Hutchinson scored the first goal of the game just 17 seconds into the contest. The team continued to dominate, with Hutchinson adding another goal in the final minutes to secure a commanding lead.

Pauric Mahony, a veteran player for Ballygunner, was a conspicuous instrument of destruction, contributing significantly to the team's victory with his marksmanship. He ended the game with an impressive tally of 1-6 from play. Peter Hogan also shone, scoring from the left in the 26th minute and popping up on the other side to hit another point in the 27th minute.

Stephen O'Keeffe, a former Waterford goalkeeper, had a notable presence in the match, making crucial saves and delivering accurate passes into his team's attack. Even corner back Aaron O'Neill managed to raise a flag, scoring a point for Ballygunner.

The score at half-time was 2-19 to 0-8 in favour of Ballygunner, a lead that they extended in the second half. By the 8th minute, they had a single-point lead, which they extended to 10 points in the next 11 minutes.

Manager Jason Ryan praised Mahony for his dedication and focus, particularly for organizing himself and training in Germany while making his first start of the championship. Local journalist Tomas McCarthy noted that Mahony had accumulated 5-114 in 15 county final appearances and four MOTM awards.

Mount Sion's score was kept moving gently upwards by Martin O'Neill's frees, but they struggled to threaten a plausible comeback. Stephen Roche's runs caused occasional trouble, but Mount Sion lacked a consistent attacking threat.

In the final minutes, Austin Gleeson's thrash at goal from a free popped out, with replacement Jack Meaney netting the rebound. Mount Sion made substitutions, with E Curran, A Kirwan, T Corcoran, Jack Meaney, and D Power coming in for Flanagan, MF O'Neill, Power, Jamie Meaney, and O'Regan respectively. Ballygunner also made substitutions, with E Cuddihy, C Tobin, E O'Brien, C Power, J Foley, and B O'Keeffe coming in for K Mahony, P Mahony, Kenny, Hogan, Fitzgerald, and M Mahony respectively.

As the final whistle blew, Ballygunner celebrated their impressive victory, securing another trophy in their impressive run of success.
