Bankruptcy leads to expanded services for individuals with autism in South Baden, however, patience is needed due to extended wait times.

In the district of South Baden, the demand for autism therapy services is on the rise. Last year, concerns about the closure of autism therapy centers in the region were alleviated as various providers stepped in to fill the gap left by the insolvency of the Center for Autism Competence South Baden (ZAKS).

One year later, relief can be felt as the district administration has reportedly negotiated an extension with the association, ensuring the continuation and expansion of these essential services. The district of Emmendingen has expanded its offer for parents and, in particular, young people in the area of group offers.

The therapy provided by the association is aimed at helping individuals with autism learn to deal with their environment. However, the lack of specialized professionals is identified as a limiting factor in addressing the increasing demand for autism therapy services. Consequently, the range of therapies in South Baden is now broader and more decentralized.

Families are involved in the therapy process, and the Department of Social Affairs and Welfare in the Ortenau district aims to further develop family-supporting services. Ideally, those affected can find therapy options near their place of residence that are better suited to them.

Unfortunately, some affected individuals may experience long waiting times for therapy places. For instance, there are around 100 people on the waiting list for therapy in Bad Säckingen (Waldshut district), roughly twice as many as a few years ago. In contrast, the district of Emmendingen has managed to avoid waiting times for therapy at any point.

The first counseling session at Autista, a provider in Freiburg, currently has a lead time of three to four months. Waiting times for diagnoses can take up to one to one and a half years for children and young people, and several years for adults.

On a positive note, the Lebenshilfe Ortenau association can now provide therapy services for adults, further expanding the availability of autism therapy services in the region. The district's efforts to address the growing demand for autism therapy services are a significant step towards ensuring that individuals with autism in South Baden receive the support they need to live fulfilling lives.
