Bavaria grapples with snow chaos: THW personnel have been active since Friday evening.
Heavy snowfall has hit southern Bavaria since last evening, causing disruptions and posing risks in various areas. The Technical Relief Organisation (THW), a federal voluntary emergency response organisation, has been deployed across the region to provide technical and logistical assistance.
Over 250 THW volunteers are currently in action, working tirelessly to combat the snowfall. The THW Bavaria team has been on the job for over 12 hours, clearing snow from roads and roofs using shovels. In Munich, 40 THW helpers are working to clear snow from roofs at the airport, while in the Berchtesgadener Land region, a team from Nördlingen is assessing and advising on the situation due to the heavy snowfall.
The THW team is also assisting with the evacuation of 50 people from a stranded train, and is working to clear numerous trucks that are stuck on federal roads and motorways due to the snow. THW construction experts are also assessing the current risk of collapse of buildings in the region.
In an effort to ensure the safety of their personnel, THW workers are wearing Personal Protective Equipment against falls (PPE) to avoid danger. Munich has shut down rail and air traffic due to the snowfall, and the roof of Oberstaufen station is buried under the snow, with 70 THW deployment forces clearing it.
A leadership group for disaster control (FuGK) has been set up in the districts of Rosenheim and Miesbach, and the THW is advising these districts on further proceedings. Unfortunately, a power outage at a TETRA base station was noticed, affecting radio communication of aid organizations.
The THW is a sought-after supporter for fire departments, police, aid organizations, and others, both domestically and internationally. The organisation, with over 80,000 volunteers nationwide, half of whom are operational personnel, is deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government.

The THW is advising on measures to be taken in case of a risk of collapse, and will continue to work diligently to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the people of southern Bavaria during this difficult time.
