Bavarian Flood of the Century Reflects: Emotional Rewind of THW Operations
In the aftermath of the catastrophic flood of the century in Bavaria last year, the Technical Relief Agency (THW) once again proved its worth as a vital emergency response organisation. The flood, caused by heavy rain in late May, reached the highest alert level 4 in several districts, affecting the most affected regions of Swabia, Upper and Lower Bavaria.
The THW, with over 86,000 volunteers nationwide, half of whom are operational personnel, was at the forefront during this disaster. The THW Bavaria anniversary serves as an opportunity to honour the deployment and deployment readiness of the THW.
To combat the water pollution caused by the flood, the THW forces treated the polluted water. High-performance pumps with a capacity of up to 25,000 liters per minute were used, and over 3.5 million liters of oil-water mixture were filtered using separation plants set up and operated by the THW. These plants are capable of separating oil and water, creating usable water and reducing special waste quantities by around 90%.
In addition to this, tens of thousands of sandbags were filled and built by hand by THW volunteers. The THW's deployment forces provided over 300,000 hours of volunteer aid.
The THW Bayern would like to thank all supporters, partners, and the population for their trust and solidarity. Dr. Fritz Helge Voß, THW Bavaria's state representative, praised the efforts of the THW volunteers.
To get an overview of the large-scale flooding and make better decisions in complex damage situations, the THW used drones. The specialized unit of the THW Landesverband Bayern, the Field Technology Service (Fachdienst Technik und Drohnen) of the THW Bayern, deployed for assistance during the flood.
The THW remains committed to being ready for action in future disasters and emergencies. The THW is grateful for the continued support and looks forward to working alongside the community in times of need.
