In a closely contested match at the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich secured a 2-0 victory against Bayer Leverkusen in their opening game of the Bundesliga season.

The first half of the game saw creativity and playfulness absent from Bayern's play, with striker Lea Schüller missing the target in the second minute, and Pernille Harder being sent on by Barcala as a sign of intent, only for Jovana Damnjanovic to hit the bar in the 68th minute.

Despite the lackluster performance, Bayern Munich seemed surprisingly resilient, with few chances created by Leverkusen in the first half. However, the visitors showed some attacking flair and were solid defensively, particularly in the first half.

New Bayern coach José Barcala expressed frustration on the sidelines during the first half, as his team struggled to find their rhythm. Giulia Gwinn, Bayern's injured player, also voiced concerns about the team's performance, suggesting that the big crowd, including football legends, might have affected Bayern's play.

The second half of the match saw Bayern Munich improving their performance, but their play remained error-prone. However, Giulia Gwinn noted that Leverkusen seemed to play more freely compared to Bayern.

In the 76th minute, Vanessa Gilles scored the first goal for Bayern Munich, heading in a corner from Klara Bühl. Just a minute later, Bühl returned the favour, assisting Gilles for her second goal of the game.

Despite the improved performance, Bayern's game still lacked the creativity and playfulness seen in the first half. Nevertheless, the errors were minimized, and the team was able to hold on to their lead until the final whistle.

The coach of Bayer Leverkusen during the match was Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on September 1, 2025, after a 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen. His replacement was not announced before the game, and it is unclear how this affected Leverkusen's performance.

Lilla Turanyi was unlucky not to get a penalty after being pulled by Magdalena Eriksson, but overall, Bayern Munich managed to maintain their dominance and kick off their Bundesliga season with a home win.

With this victory, Bayern Munich will look to build on their performance and continue their pursuit of the Bundesliga title. The team's next match is against Borussia Mönchengladbach, where they will aim to extend their winning streak and solidify their position at the top of the table.
