Detmold's Family and Child Support Projects Gain State Attention
Detmold, a city in northwestern Germany, is making strides in family and child support initiatives, attracting the attention of high-level officials in the state.
Mayor Frank Hilker is planning to expand the F.I.T. (Familien.Info.Treff) project into a B.I.T. (Bildungs.Info.Treff), focusing on addressing young people's questions about school, career, and local participation. The current F.I.T. project serves as a central hub for families in need, offering prenatal advice, childcare options, a quiet play area for toddlers, and a meeting point for parents.
In a separate but related development, the Detmold Child Protection House, known as K.I.D.S., has model status statewide. This project, which is a child protection initiative, takes in children in crisis situations and provides care in a child-friendly environment for up to ten days. K.I.D.S. is used around 100 times a year to care for children taken into protective custody due to suspected child abuse. Children cared for at K.I.D.S. can be near their familiar environment while their future placement or return to their family is sorted out.
State Secretary Lorenz Bahr, the State Secretary in the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Flight and Integration of the state, visited Detmold to learn about these family support projects. He praised the work of the youth welfare experts and the mayor in Detmold, and plans to continue advocating for dialogue between different levels of youth welfare about innovative solutions.
Unfortunately, a successful project like "Elternchancen" had to be discontinued due to lack of funding. This project provided on-site support and guidance to parents at two schools.
State Minister for Family Affairs Josefine Paul is also set to visit Detmold's family, youth, and child support model this summer. The focus of her visit will be on understanding the family support offered at F.I.T. and the child protection project K.I.D.S.
Detmold's innovative approach to family and child support is gaining attention at the state level, with the city using funding to explore new paths and make them permanent if they are successful. The beacon projects for families and children in Detmold are certainly worth keeping an eye on.
