Belarus Prohibits Several Popular Russian Beer Brands
In a recent development, the Belarus State Standardization Body has expanded its list of hazardous products to include several beer-based drinks produced in Russia. The beer drinks in question are manufactured by LLC "NEW CRAFT" in the Krasnodar region and LLC "NEW DRINKS" in the Leningrad Region, but their labeling does not indicate the country of origin.
The restrictions imposed on these drinks include a ban on sales, a ban on import, and circulation, and seizure from circulation. The reasons for these measures are twofold: non-compliance with Belarusian production regulations for beer drinks and the use of a food additive called potassium sorbate in their production.
Potassium sorbate is not permitted for use in beer drink production, yet the manufacturers have declared its use in the labeling of the listed drinks. This additive is known to have preservative properties, but its use in beer can alter the taste and aroma, potentially leading to consumer confusion.
The affected beer drinks include "Gansa Gose 20" and "Paradox Michigold." "Gansa Gose 20" is produced by LLC "NEW CRAFT," while "Paradox Michigold" is the product of LLC "NEW DRINKS." It is unclear at this time which Russian breweries are affected by these trade restrictions in Belarus.
This is not the first time such issues have arisen. In the past, concerns have been raised about the lack of transparency in the labeling of Russian beer drinks, with the country of manufacture not being indicated. This lack of information can make it difficult for consumers to make informed choices and for authorities to enforce regulations.
As a result of these restrictions, these beer drinks are currently banned from sales, import, and circulation in Belarus. Consumers are advised to check the labeling of their beer drinks carefully to ensure they are compliant with local regulations. Manufacturers, on the other hand, would benefit from being more transparent about their production processes and the countries in which their products are made.
