Benfica starts the League with a dominant performance against Belenenses, maintaining their competitive stance against Sporting.

In a thrilling start to the 2022 National Handball Championship, Benfica showcased their dominance with a resounding 37-25 victory over Belenenses at the Luz Pavilion.

The match began with Benfica charging ahead, thanks in part to a crucial goal from Gustavo Capdeville. This early lead set the tone for the rest of the game, as Benfica maintained a significant advantage throughout. By half-time, the score stood at 19-12 in favour of Benfica, with Belenenses facing a seven-goal deficit.

In the second half, Belenenses managed to score one more goal than in the first, but Benfica's offensive power was unmatched. The team, coached by Jota González, scored one less, resulting in an 18-13 score in the second half. Despite Belenenses getting close to four goals at one point, Benfica held their ground and secured the win.

Miguel Sánchez was the top scorer for Benfica, netting six goals, while Belone Moreira and Mikita Vailupau followed closely behind with five goals each. The Eagles' nearly 40 goals were 'shared' among 11 players in the game.

This victory places Benfica among the top four teams in the table, joining Sporting, Artística de Avanca, and Póvoa AC. Notably, Sporting, the defending champions, also started the new season with a win against Marítimo.

However, Sporting's focus is now shifting towards the Champions League and an upcoming derby against Benfica. Meanwhile, the matches between Águas Santas and FC Gaia, scheduled for this Wednesday, and the duel between ABC and FC Porto, set for September 17, are still to be played.

Jota González acknowledged the team's strong start but also mentioned that the team had many injuries during the preseason, affecting their rhythm. Despite these challenges, Benfica has demonstrated their resilience and determination in the opening game of the national handball championships.
